Neisseria gonorrhoeae culture
Neisseria gonorrhoeae can form round, raised, moist, smooth, translucent or off-white colonies after 24 to 48 hours of culture on polymyxin B blood agar (a commonly used medium). If the culture is continued, the volume of the colonies increases, the surface is rough, and the edges shrink. If it shows the above situation, it is preliminarily judged as positive for N. gonorrhoeae, but it is further determined that an oxidase test or a sugar fermentation test is required.
