Serum cortisol

Cortisol is produced and secreted by the adrenal cortex and is a steroidal glucocorticoid. Its secretion is controlled by the adrenocorticotropic hormone of the anterior pituitary. The determination of serum cortisol directly reflects the secretory function of the adrenal cortex.
