Suppurative mumps

Suppurative mumps, also known as spotted mumps, and chronic recurrent mumps, are the most common salivary inflammations that can occur on one side or on both sides. There are significant differences in outcomes between adults and children. This is an ascending infection from the mouth, usually caused by S. aureus that can affect the parotid duct. Typical infections occur in elderly or chronic patients who have dry mouth due to eating less or taking anticholinergics, and patients after general anesthesia. Fever, chills, and unilateral parotid pain and swelling are seen; the parotid glands are hard and Tenderness, erythema and edema on the skin above. Compression of the parotid gland causes the pus to flow out of the parotid duct, and piles of Gram-positive cocci are often seen after smear.
