Pediatric secondary thrombocytosis
In some physiological states (such as after exercise) and different types of acute and chronic diseases, it is possible to increase the number of platelets to more than 400 × 109 / L, which is called secondary (reactive) thrombocytosis (secondary thrombocythemia). The cause can be identified from the history and clinical manifestations. Thrombocytosis means that the number of platelets exceeds the upper limit of normal value. The number of platelets often exceeds 1000 × 109 / L (1 million / mm3) and can reach 14000 × 109 / L (14 million / mm3). The platelet size is abnormal. The changes are huge, and children are rare. Mucosal bleeding is the main type, such as hematuria, gastrointestinal bleeding, and nosebleeds.
