Atlas fracture

Atlantic fractures are also known as Jefferson fractures (named after being first reported by Jefferson in 1920). When the annular atlas is subjected to axial compression and the head is extended backwards and downwards, the violent transoccipital condyle acts on the lateral mass of the atlas and causes the atlas ring burst (scattering) fracture. The anterior and posterior arches of the atlas were fractured bilaterally, so that the lateral mass was squeezed and separated around. Although such injuries are rare in clinical practice, serious accidents can occur if they are not handled properly and should be noted.
