Hypothyroidism in the elderly
Hypothyroidism (hypothyroidism for short) is a systemic disease caused by insufficient thyroid hormone synthesis or insufficient physiological effects. It can occur at any age, and it is not uncommon for the elderly. The literature reports that the prevalence of clinical hypothyroidism among the 65-year-old elderly is about 1% to 5%, and another 5% to 15% of the population is associated with subclinical hypothyroidism. The prevalence is higher among hospitalized patients.
