Postpartum thyroiditis
Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) is a thyroid dysfunction syndrome that occurs one year after delivery and can be temporary or permanent. The pathological basis is thyroid autoimmune inflammation, which is the most common and characteristic of postpartum autoimmune thyroiditis. The disease can also occur after an abortion at 5 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Postpartum thyroiditis and postpartum thyroid syndrome are two different concepts. The latter refers to thyroid dysfunction that occurs postpartum due to pre-existing or ongoing thyroid disease.
