Pleurotomy

Pleurotomy is a palliative operation, the purpose of which is to remove parietal pleura and part of visceral pleura to prevent recurrence of pleural effusion and reduce symptoms of chest pain. Surgical advantages include low surgical mortality (<2%) and retention of lung tissue, which allows patients with poor cardiopulmonary function to tolerate surgery.
