Glycogen staining
Polysaccharides containing 1,2-ethylene glycol groups in cells are oxidized by iodic acid to generate aldehyde groups, which interact with special staining solution to turn colorless magenta into red compounds and precipitate in the cytoplasm. The shade of red is proportional to the amount of 1,2-glycol groups reacting in the cell.
