Brain death

The human brain is composed of 6 parts: the medulla oblongata, the pontine, the midbrain, the cerebellum, the midbrain, and the telencephalon. The medulla oblongata and the midbrain are collectively called the brainstem. The respiratory center of the human body is located in the brainstem, so impaired brainstem function will directly cause respiratory function to stop. For patients who have a heartbeat but no spontaneous breathing in the clinic and have permanently lost brain function, they will eventually die. This is called brain death.
