Thyroglossal cysts and branchial fissure cysts
Thyroglossal duct cysts and gill cleft cysts are both dysplastic cysts. The former is caused by the incomplete degradation of the thyroglossal duct during embryonic thyroid formation, which remains in deep tissues and produces secretions that accumulate in the tissues; the latter is an embryonic period Gill fissure formed by residual tissue.
