Strong base poisoning
Strong alkalines include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, ammonium hydroxide, etc., which are less corrosive. Bleaching powder contains 3% to 6% potassium hypochlorite. Strong alkali compounds have a wide range of uses and are also included in daily-use detergents, ditch cleaners, polishes, paint removers and perm agents. Pediatric poisoning is mostly caused by mistake. Local contact with strong alkali can cause burns and ulcers, and those who absorb strong alkali orally can cause liver and kidney disease.
