Iodine mainly enters the body with food and drinking water. During the process of digestion and absorption, most of the organic iodine and elemental iodine are reduced to inorganic iodide (I-) before it can be absorbed by the small intestine. The amount of iodine in the diet varies greatly depending on dietary habits and the iodine content in the local soil and water. Under normal dietary conditions, the iodine intake from food per person per day in China is about 100-200 µg. According to China's standards, the daily physiological iodine requirement of normal adults is 120-150 µg, pregnant women or nursing mothers 200-250 µg, and infants 20 ~ 30µg, children are 50 ~ 80µg, adolescents are 160 ~ 200µg, only a small part of the iodine intake is taken up by the thyroid, and most of them are excreted by the kidney. The minimum daily iodine requirement of normal adults is about 100 ~ 150µg.
