Subacute combined degeneration
Subacute combined degeneration, also known as vitamin B12 neuropathy, is caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. More common in adults over 40 years of age. Men and women can get sick. Slowly progressing degenerative changes occur mainly in the spinal cord, lateral cord, and peripheral nerves. Clinical signs of progressive sensory ataxia, spastic paralysis, deep sensory disturbance and peripheral nerve damage are often accompanied by malignant anemia and no gastric acid.
