Peristalsis of esophageal smooth muscle stops

Part of the esophageal smooth muscle stops and the lower esophageal sphincter tone is typical in patients with scleroderma esophagus. Part of the peristalsis of esophageal smooth muscle is one of the clinical manifestations of scleroderma esophagus. Sclerodermal esophagus refers to scleroderma, also known as progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) involving the esophageal muscularis and its dynamic abnormalities. Esophageal involvement manifests dysphagia, heartburn, and is often accompanied by vomiting, fullness behind the sternum or upper abdomen.
