Episcleral inflammation
Outer scleral inflammation refers to the inflammatory process of a thin layer of tissue that surrounds the eyeball. The white part of the eye is called the sclera. The sclera is a tough, thick tissue that is a protective barrier for the eyeball. Five layers of film covering the outside of the sclera and the inside of the eyelid are called conjunctiva. There is a thin layer of tissue between the conjunctiva and sclera called the outer sclera. When infection or inflammation occurs in the outer layer of sclera, it is collectively called episcleritis.
