Lower Limb Elephantine Surgery
Elephantiasis is named for the thickening of the skin, the rough surface, and even the hardness of the elephant skin due to the age of lymphedema. Lymphedema is caused by congenital lymphatic hypoplasia or acquired causes, such as filariasis infection, recurrent erysipelas, lymphadenectomy, radiation therapy, post-traumatic and extensive metastasis of the lymphatics, which narrows and occludes the lymphatic vessels. Terminal lymphatic reflux is caused by stasis in the subcutaneous tissue space. Can occur in the upper limbs, lower limbs and perineum. This article only introduces surgery for lower limb elephantiasis.
