Thumb and finger defect reconstruction

According to experts from Shanghai Xijiao Orthopaedic Hospital, thumb function accounts for 40% of the total hand function, and the lack of it will seriously affect the pinch, grip, grasp, and twist functions of the hand. Conversely, the thumb is alive, and the other four systems are all missing or partially missing, and they have the same obstacles. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the thumb or other four fingers. At present, there are many methods for thumb and finger reconstruction, and each method has certain advantages and disadvantages. Not all missing fingers require reconstructive surgery, which needs to be considered based on the length of the residual finger, the condition of the stump, the condition of the toe and foot, the age of the patient, the general condition of the patient, the requirements of the patient, and occupational and work needs. Thumb reconstruction is currently recognized as a better method for free toe transplantation and thumb flap reconstruction.
