Cerebrospinal fluid-binding myelin basic protein

Cerebrospinal fluid-bound myelin basic protein (MBP) is synthesized in oligodendrocytes, is composed of 170 amino acid residues, has a molecular weight of 18,000, is rich in lipids, and has a protein content of about 30%. MBP is a component of neural tissue. CSF is released within a few days after the nerve tissue is damaged. Therefore, the increase of MBP concentration in CSF can reflect the destruction of nerve myelin sheath integrity.
