Hexosamine holoenzyme
Hexosamine is a hydrolase in the lysosome. Glycosamine total enzyme assays have implications for the diagnosis of many blood diseases. Clinical significance: Elevated serum hexosamine total enzyme: diabetes, pregnancy; decreased serum hexosamine total enzyme: Sandhoff disease. Decreased platelet hexosamine total enzymes: pregnancy, insulin-dependent diabetes. Urine glucosamine total enzymes increased: nephrotic syndrome, acute renal transplant rejection, urinary tract infection, acute tubular necrosis, acute glomerulonephritis, chronic pyelonephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, heart bypass, burns. Lymphocyte hexosamine total enzyme decline: chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
