Serum growth hormone
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a protein secreted by the pituitary cells and is a peptide hormone. Growth hormone produced by recombinant DNA technology is abbreviated as r-HGH. Under normal circumstances, the growth hormone HGH is secreted in pulses. The secretion of growth hormone (hGH) is regulated by growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and growth hormone inhibitory hormone (GHIH, also known as somatostatin SS) produced by the hypothalamus. Affected by gender, age, and circadian rhythm, secretion increases significantly during sleep. The main physiological function of growth hormone is to promote the growth of all other tissues except nerve tissue; promote the body's anabolic metabolism and protein synthesis; promote lipolysis; have an antagonistic effect on insulin; inhibit glucose utilization and increase blood glucose and other effects. The determination of serum growth hormone is helpful for the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency caused by giant disease, acromegaly, and hereditary growth hormone production defects.
