Malignant pericardial effusion in the elderly
Invasion of the heart is not uncommon when malignant tumors progress; broncho-lung cancer is the primary focus, and mediastinal tumors are more common. Connective tissue disease and lupus erythematosus can also be caused. AIDS has recently been reported as an important cause of pericardial effusion. If pericardial tamponade is an emergency, it should be treated urgently.
