Malignant malnutrition
Malignant malnutrition is a syndrome caused by a severe lack of protein in food. It is common in children, especially in Africa and Asia, where people eat enough or excessive calories to eat starch. Severe protein deficiency can cause physical and mental retardation, muscle wasting, fatty liver, moon face, and edema. Gut surgery can induce similar secondary protein deficiency.
