Dentate process malformation
The dentate process is an important bony connection structure of the upper cervical vertebra joint. It secures the atlanto-axial joint stability by restraining the odontoid process to a certain anatomical range by means of the transverse atlantic ligament. Dentate process and transverse ligament dysplasia are the main congenital factors that cause atlantoaxial instability. At present, such malformations are not uncommon, accounting for about 4/5 of occipital and neck deformities.
