Gigantism and Acromegaly
Permanent hypersecretion of growth hormone in the body causes hyperplasia and hypertrophy of soft tissues, bones, and internal organs, as well as endocrine and metabolic disorders, which occur before puberty, and those with unfused chin are gigantism; those that occur after puberty and have fused the chin For acromegaly. Patients with gigantism often continue to develop acromegaly. The disease is not uncommon, with a male to female ratio of about 1.5: 1. The age of onset was highest in the group of 31 to 40 years old, followed by the group of 21 to 30 years old and 41 to 50 years old. Foreign literature reports that adult men with heights greater than 2.0m and women greater than 1.85m are called giants. However, it should be noted that in some regions, some families are taller than ordinary people and have a height of 1.9 to 2.0m. Such people are not giants. Gigantism rarely has a family genetic predisposition, and its parents and siblings are generally of normal build.
