Although many powerful antibiotics are currently in clinical use, pneumonia is still one of the most common diseases. In the United States, pneumonia with pleural effusion is the second leading cause of pleural effusion, and the first cause of exudative pleural effusion. Most pneumonia-like pleural effusions are self-absorbed through effective antibiotic treatment. However, about 10% of pleural effusions require surgical intervention.
