Mediastinal emphysema
The accumulation of gas in the mediastinal cellular tissue is called mediastinal emphysema, which occurs in elderly patients with chronic bronchitis, long-term asthma attacks or chest trauma complicated by high-pressure pneumothorax. The mediastinum is a layer of space between the chest on both sides, where the heart, trachea, and esophagus are located.
