Nerve fiber overgrowth
Traumatic neuromas are caused by excessive growth of nerve fibers in peripheral nerve stumps, which damage pain and tenderness. Scarring or removal of distal stumps can cause phantom limb syndrome. The disease often occurs at the amputation site of the extra fingers, or in the crotch of the third metatarsal space.
