Bone marrow damage
Osteomyelitis is an infection and destruction of bone. Caused by aerobic or anaerobic bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi. Osteomyelitis occurs in the vertebrae, the feet of diabetic patients, or the site of penetrating bone injury caused by trauma or surgery. The most common site in children is long bones with good blood supply (such as the metaphysis of the tibia or femur). Bone infection with vascular occlusion can cause osteonecrosis and local infection spread. Infection can spread through the bone cortex to under the periosteum and form a subcutaneous abscess. The latter will drain spontaneously through the skin.
