Blood galactose

Galactose is a hexose. This test is used to detect galactosemia. Galactosemia is caused by galactose kinase or galactose-1-phosphate uridine transferase deficiency, which prevents galactose from being converted and utilized, resulting in an increase in galactose in the blood and urine. Galactosemia is a genetic defect.
