D-dimer
Plasminase can break down fibrinogen and fibrin, which is the key enzyme for fibrinolysis. Therefore, the determination of fibrinogen and fibrin degradation products is a landmark indicator of increased fibrinolysis (high fibrinolytic state). Fibrin is usually cross-linked to the vessel wall under the action of factor XIIIa. This cross-linked fibrin produces specific D-dimers upon cleavage.
