Tangier disease
Tangier's disease, also known as alpha-proteinemia, is related to Tangier Island, Virginia. This is the hometown of the first patient with the disease. It is characterized by almost complete lack of high-density lipoprotein (HDLS) For example, cholesterol esters accumulate in tissue cells in many tissues, especially in the tonsils, lymph nodes, thymus, bone marrow, liver, spleen, mucous membranes, and skin. It is autosomal recessive and has a low incidence.
