Acute purulent thyroiditis

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a purulent inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by Staphylococcus aureus and the like, and is mostly secondary to bacterial infections in the mouth, neck and other parts. Bauchet first described the AST in 1857. In the absence of antibiotics, the incidence of AST accounts for 0.1% of thyroid surgery diseases. With the application of antibiotics, AST is relatively rare, and its incidence has not been clearly reported.
