Herpes simplex virus scleritis
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection can cause scleritis or episcleritis. Outer scleritis is caused by direct viral invasion during active HSV infection; scleritis is caused by direct viral invasion during active HSV infection or an immune response produced by the virus several days after the first viral infection.
