Trichiasis

Introduction

Introduction Trichiasis: refers to the abnormal growth of the eyelashes to the rear, so as to touch the eyeball. Trichiasis is a common external eye disease among children, adolescents and the elderly, mainly due to the abnormal growth direction of the eyelashes. Eyelashes with abnormal growth direction, especially the eyelashes that grow on the surface of the cornea, often rub the corneal epithelium, causing foreign body sensation, fear of light, tearing and other symptoms, and can cause eyeball congestion, conjunctivitis, corneal epithelial shedding, keratitis, cornea Vasospasm, corneal ulcers, corneal leukoplakia, which in turn affects vision.

Causes of "trichiasis"

There are two major types of congenital and acquired, congenital trichiasis has trichiasis after birth, usually in the lower eyelids. Because the eyelashes are stuck to the eyeballs, the baby often blinks and tears. If the cornea is stabbed, the eyes will be red and afraid of light.

The most common cause of acquired trichiasis is caused by trachoma. Because trachoma can cause scarring of the orbital conjunctiva, which leads to eyelid varus and trichiasis. Eye burns, eyelid trauma, or eyelid surgery can also cause eyelid scarring and normal eyelashes to the eyeball. In addition, diseases such as pemphigus in the eye may cause trichiasis due to scarring of the conjunctiva of the eyelid.

Because trachoma can cause scarring of the orbital conjunctiva, which leads to eyelid varus and trichiasis. Eye burns, eyelid trauma, or eyelid surgery can also cause eyelid scarring and normal eyelashes to the eyeball. In addition, diseases such as pemphigus in the eye may cause trichiasis due to scarring of the conjunctiva of the eyelid; if necessary, CT examination of the eye is performed to clarify the cause and severity of the trichiasis, and provide a basis for further treatment.

Diagnosis

Differential diagnosis

Differential diagnosis of trichiasis:

1. Inverted eyelash: refers to the eyelid, especially the position where the edge of the eye curls toward the eyeball. Therefore, varus and trichiasis often exist at the same time.

2, chaotic eyelashes: trichiasis refers to the growth of eyelashes backwards, chaos is the irregular growth of eyelashes.
